Pyrenees: the death of a 17 year old skier stuck under a avalanche

Un young skier of 17 years, hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, Jan. 2 after being caught in an avalanche while he was off-roading with his father at the station Gourette (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) , died at the hospital in Pau, it was learned from the préfecture.

Le death of the young, a native of Nantes and transported in critical condition after spending several hours in the snow, took place shortly before 19:00, the source said, confirming a report by South West on its website. "Relief alerted by his father to 24:45 located the young man about two hours after the avalanche occurred," had said earlier the prefecture a corresponding AFP .

"The young man and his father (...) have triggered an avalanche quite large, about 200 meters long, around 12:40 in the valley of Anglas, part of the off-piste Pyrenean resort", has also said an official of the station. Près 50 men, police platoon mountaineering Oloron-Sainte-Marie (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), firefighters, rescue and civil protection helicopters were immediately made on site. The young man had been located by avalanche dog. "The challenge was to dig for relief under 4-5 feet of snow before (it) out," had they shown in préfecture.
